“Watching the Children” At Owner's Risk Series ©1973

About Susan Ressler     Inquiry

In this picture, we watch the children as the young girl does at the far left. Like her, we are helpless to change this family's circumstances; they live in a cardboard-lined shack, without electricity or a shred of adornment. Dirt and underwear litter the floor. In the foreground, a boy is tying worn shoes, and his bare back reveals ribs too prominent for one so young. Malnourished and with little to pass the time, the children keep each other company on a bed that has seen better times.
